July Arqana Summer Sale kicked off the month, two purchases were made, both two-year-olds that have gone into training with Tom Clover. A smart Zarak colt out of a Kingman mare for €40,00 and a Shalaa filly from the French black-type family of Wheels On Fire, bought for €10,000.
Tattersalls July Sale rolled around quickly bringing with it a catalogue of a whopping 923 lots. JS Bloodstock secured four lots, Juneberry a Night Of Thunder filly from Godolphin that will head to France and to the stable of Mario Barrati in Chantilly. Harvard Sound, a gelding with one start and one win purchased for 50,000 Guineas will go back to trainer Tom Clover. City House, a son of Night Of Thunder from the Stable of James Fanshawe will head to George Scott and will hopefully be destined for a winter campaign in Bahrain, the colt was knocked down for 180,000 Guineas. Finally, Belcamo was secured for 35,000 Guineas from Andrew Balding, the 72 rated gelding is a son of Belardo from the black-type family of Hawk Island and Hawk Hill and goes into training with Alex Hales in Northamptonshire with career over hurdles now in mind for him.
Typically in the depth of the summer there’s been a lot of activity on the racecourse, the Thursday of the July meeting at Newmarket saw Royal Supremacy run home a close second in the Group 3 Bahrain Trophy Stakes for owner Michael Blencowe. As a result the Make Believe three-year-old colt has been sold to Australian owners after performing consistently in Group company throughout the summer, he was originally purchased at Tattersalls Book 2 for 65,000 Guineas.
Al Musmak won the Listed Sir Henry Cecil Stakes easily for owner Sheikh Abdullah Almalek Alsabah and trainer Roger Varian, the son of Night Of Thunder was a Book 1 purchase for 95,000 Guineas.
At Chester there was a double on the day for owner and trainer duo Michael Blencowe and Andrew Balding – Brighton Boy got up to win his third start as a two-year-old in the Maiden, a purchase from the new and very popular Tattersalls Sommerville sale, the Gregorian cost a small 21,000 Guineas. This was quickly followed by Transitioning later in the evening to coast home easily in a 0-82 Handicap.
Griselda bang the hat-trick winning three handicaps in July for trainer George Scott. Two of her wins came two days apart at Lingfield then onto Thirsk to win there too, the daughter of Kodi Bear has proved a tough proposition for owners The Trading Partnership. The two-year-old filly was purchased from Tattersalls Book 3 for 34,000 Guineas.
Bay City Roller broke his maiden on debut for the in-form yard of George Scott, the colt purchased for €320,000 at Goffs Book 1 Sale confidently put the field of runners to bed at Sandown. The New Bay colt was well admired at the sales complex and possesses all of the credentials to be a good racehorse. Owner Clive Washbourne has an exciting racing career with the colt to come!
Rogue Lightning went on to finish a confident second place in York’s Listed City Walls Stakes for trainer Tom Clover and owner Wathnan Racing. The gelding is a son of Kodiac and was originally purchased from Tattersalls Craven Sale for Rogues Gallery for 42,000 Guineas and sold the following year to current owners Wathnan for a cool £1,000,000.
Another filly that was sold on from the Rogues ownership was Rogue Millennium, now trained by Joseph O’Brien and owned by Scott Heider, she came home third in Deauville’s Group 2 Prix Rothschild and was 3rd in the Group 1 Falmouth stakes on the July course behind the freakishly talented Porta Fortuna. Purchased by Billy for 35,000 Guineas from the Tattersalls February Sale she then went onto make 1,650,000 Guineas two years later at the Tattersalls December Sale. She has achieved multiple Group placings and a Group 2 win during her time with Tom Clover, now with Jospeh she is placing at Group level at every start.
Invictus Gold won on his second debut for Moulton Racing, the two-year-old gelding was a purchase from Goffs Book 1 for €65,000. There will be more to come from the gelding as the year goes on.
Consistent winning handicappers that have to be mentioned are Imperial Express, Cervetto, Dingwall, God Of Fire, Rogue Soldier, My Boy Jack and more. A very successful July!
JS Bloodstock Consultancy was a lead sponsor at the annual Thoroughbreds In Sport Polo Day, an initiative that was created by leading English polo player Jack Richardson and Billy. In just it’s third year the day is now a feature of the polo calendar and takes place at Guards Polo Club in the ground of Windsor Great Park. Sponsors such as Lycetts and the Japanese Racing Authority have recently come on board. There was a turn out of 50 ex race horses all competing for prizes of up to £4,000, this was followed by an auctions held in the revered Guards Polo Club house that saw 10 ponies come under the hammer from Tattersalls auctioneer Freddie McKibbin.
